There's an abandoned gas station a couple of doors down from the business I work for. From my desk to the gas station is probably less than a three minute walk. Today local cops recovered a baby (alive, thank God!) that had been kidnapped and then dumped like so much garbage in a trash bin behind that old gas station. Supposedly the child was there, alone in the dumpster, for two hours.
Sometimes I think that the most perverse, evil, God-hating generations of the past, throughout all of history, have nothing on us in the 21st Century. But the reality is I'm sure kidnapping and baby-dumping like that are sins nearly as old as Cain and Abel. It's just hard for me to believe that something so evil happened a stone's throw away from where I was sitting today. I wish I had known that baby was in there.

Yes, Raindream is right. This is portrayed quite vividly and powerfully in Sigmund Brouwer and Hank Hanegraaf's novel, "The Last Disciple".
In Ancient Rome, the father decided whether he wanted the baby or not. If the baby was unwanted by dad, the baby would be placed out on the street to die of exposure. This was their custom.
In India, for centuries, and this goes on today, midwives would kill unwanted female babies right after birth by smothering them or by leaving them outside to die of exposure.
Evil, Evil, Evil. You are right Bird. The good news is that even our secular American post-Christian society seems to understand that harming children is evil. The good news is that most people where you live would have saved that child had they known about it.

Things in the later Empire were very different than in the early Republic. The early Romans considered children a blessing and loved big families. The Romans of the Empire had more "sophisticated" attitudes that they picked up from other cultures, and would look at more children than you had planned on as a curse. And where have I heard this before ...?
Anyway, this was a horrible episode, for sure. Thanks for your heart in this, Bird.
Awhile back on the History Channel, the story was told about some Roman high-up government official. He had access to a large house on a hill overlooking the sea. He would have children brought to him, he would use them sexually, then have them thrown over the cliff to the sea below. I couldn't believe what I was watching. Back to the present,I'm so glad the baby was found. I hope this child comes to know the Lord, His grace in deep ways, is a blessing for the Kingdom.
I'm so glad they rescued this little one!! We each can help to rescue little ones forgotten by society by particpating in 40 Days for Life which starts tomorrow! For those who are interested (and to see if your local community is participating) you can go to www.40daysforlife.com

I think it's impressive that the cops found the child in two hours. I wonder how they did it.
But about children being left alone, that's how the Romans killed unwanted children. They left them on the road side. Christians, as I understand it, would rescue them.
