"As they passed the rows of houses they saw through the open doors that men were sweeping and dusting and washing dishes, while the women sat around in groups, gossiping and laughing. "What has happened?" the Scarecrow asked a sad-looking man with a bushy beard, who wore an apron and was wheeling a baby-carriage along the sidewalk. "Why, we've had a revolution, your Majesty -- as you ought to know very well," replied the man; "and since you went away the women have been running things to suit themselves. I'm glad you have decided to come back and restore order, for doing housework and minding the children is wearing out the strength of every man in the Emerald City." "Hm!" said the Scarecrow, thoughtfully. "If it is such hard work as you say, how did the women manage it so easily?" "I really do not know," replied the man, with a deep sigh. "Perhaps the women are made of cast-iron.""

If I Ran For Office... Part 3

TV Spot #3 - "Liberty"

(Me lounging behind a desk with my feet propped up and a pillow behind my head. A computer screen behind me shows "Solitaire")

Too many politicians say they want to work for you. But their version of work is finding ways to regulate you, tax you or spend your money. Virtually every law passed does one of those three things. If that's the kind of thing that politicians consider work, than I would rather they would do nothing. Wouldn't you?

I won't be your nanny. I won't give you more rules to follow or take your neighbors' money to give you a handout. You only need one momma.

If you elect me, I promise that I will stay out of your way. I promise that I won't write, work for or vote for any law unless it protects your Life, Liberty or Pursuit of Happiness. I promise to leave you alone because I believe that you will do better if government stays out of your way.

My name is Philip Schroeder and I believe that the best government governs least so you can bet I approve this message."

(I lean back in my chair and close my eyes for a nap. Fade to black)

Over screen that says "Vote Phil", announcer says, "Vote Phil. He won't work unless he has to. And that's a good thing."

Phil! Dude! I'll vote for you in a heartbeat as many times as I have to! I think the best thing to do is get you elected and replicate 534 more times. :-)

As I write this I now count a total of three votes for you. We are off to a ripping grassroots movement here!

In one of your earlier posts, you said running for office is a dream of yours that will never happen. I think you running just became a dream of mine, and maybe it should happen...

7. Sherry Early - 01/30/2009 6:07 pm CST

I like your ads. Are you sure it will never happen?

8. Roy - 01/30/2009 8:20 pm CST

He won't work unless he has to.

Best political ad I ever read.

But only those who get it will vote for Phil.

Sigh. Too bad. Bet Phil would have been great....

This is way off topic but still, barely, related. The Nevada State Legislature only works part time.

I love it, Phil! Of course, if you said these things while underwater, that would set you apart.

We've already had one of you in Oklahoma named Keating.

Could you tell us how stupid we are for not electing your wife too?

Milly,
Thanks for the wake up. With one comment you reminded me why I can never and will never enter politics. I would take it way too personally.

Just because I need to say it - the real purpose of these posts was to use the "If I ran for Office" as a rhetorical device to express some political views and commentary.

Milly, I know I could look it up, but tell me more from your point of view about Keating.

I'm a conservative and very familiar with this ideology and I agree with it to a point. Yet as a Christian, I think that we are also being somewhat naive to think that leaving the private sector alone will produce the best society possible (and I am even more afraid of the thought that Government will usher in this promised Utopia). Realistically, private companies are run by people who are fallen and, if left to their own devices, will behave irresponsibly. Like this housing crisis we have, everybody looked out for their own interests and look where it took us. There has to be some middle ground somewhere, I think common sense should replace ideology.
