"As they passed the rows of houses they saw through the open doors that men were sweeping and dusting and washing dishes, while the women sat around in groups, gossiping and laughing. "What has happened?" the Scarecrow asked a sad-looking man with a bushy beard, who wore an apron and was wheeling a baby-carriage along the sidewalk. "Why, we've had a revolution, your Majesty -- as you ought to know very well," replied the man; "and since you went away the women have been running things to suit themselves. I'm glad you have decided to come back and restore order, for doing housework and minding the children is wearing out the strength of every man in the Emerald City." "Hm!" said the Scarecrow, thoughtfully. "If it is such hard work as you say, how did the women manage it so easily?" "I really do not know," replied the man, with a deep sigh. "Perhaps the women are made of cast-iron.""

Is Deathbed Repentance Credible?

It depends on how much sin you think Christ's sacrifice can cover (Heb. 10:12) and how much faith you think receiving grace requires (Matt. 17:20).

To those on their deathbeds: Sure. Go for it.

To those not there yet: Too high risk. Don't wait.

To the thinklings: what prompted this blog posting?

JMJ, nothing specific prompted it. I was letting my mind wander in pondering the greatness of Christ's sacrifice and the infinitesimal amount of faith that is sufficient to receive it, and it wandered to the sometimes controversial question of deathbed confessions/repentances.

Some say that it cheapens grace. How do you know it's not fire insurance? What about a life of repentance or fruit, etc?

My take on that is that Christ's sacrifice is big enough for a million lifetimes of sin and according to him, you only need faith the size of a mustard seed to receive grace's might work.

First thing that comes to mind is the story Jesus tells of the man who pays the workers who he hires at noon the same wage as those he hires with just one hour left in the day.

Yes, if genuine I believe repentance at any point in life is credible.

First, let me give a hearty "Amen" each to Bob Sacramento and Karl.

Second ... I don't get the question. Your repentance doesn't have to convince me, so it really doesn't matter whether I think it's credible or not. God, who is very hard to fool, is the one who makes those calls.

To answer, though, I figure that if Jesus can forgive a guy in the process of being executed on a cross He can forgive anyone in a deathbed-type situation.

Whoops. I didn't read Wickle's last paragraph.

So it's already been said.

That's still my answer though. :-)
