Live blogging the show (well sort of, we recorded it as our youngest had a football game).
This post will be chock-full of spoilers, along with plenty of snarky comments, wuzzats!, and, perhaps, even some cogent remarks about the show (but don't count on it).
This is the FALL FINALE! Do shows normally have those? Well, I guess Lost gets to be special.
Hmmm. It opens with the back of someone's head. Kate? I can't tell.
Yep, there's our Kate. In the real world and up to no good, my guess. Maybe there's a miniature airplane in that box?
No, it's a wedding veil.
Boyfriend. A policeman, with a suave, smooth opening line of "Hey, wanna get it on?"
Back to the cages. Sawyer's doing the whole "prisoner throwing something against the wall" thing from The great escape. I think he's mad at Kate because he refuses to get her a fish biscuit.
The aquarium. Jack appears to be ready to operate; he's going over Ben's bloodwork. Sounds like the operation has to happen fast.
Whoa. Jack's been playing games with them! He has no intention of doing the surgery. He just wants to see Ben die! He's being tough - He even threw a file at Juliet - and Jack-lovers everywhere are swooning right now.
Jack is the man! Jack is the man! Jack is the -

Kate is in bed with the policeman. He jokingly foreshadowed that "it's bad luck to see the bride before the wedding". Then she shot him.
Not really, but I expect him to die soon. His names Kevin. And from the look on her face after she said "I love you too Kevin", she doesn't. [later edit: he doesn't die, and she does love him. Maybe I'm just dumb]
Back to the cages - and they are only going to make Kate work today. Danny is opening Sawyer's cage and I foresee Sawyer getting the crud beaten out of him any second now. But he's just making him go to work too because Kate was complaining.
Back in the jungle. Everyone's gathered over Eko's body. Locke wants to bury him right there. There have been "too many funerals on the beach".
Sayid and Locke are walking back to the beach, and talking about the monster. Locke believes that the monster might be what brought them here, and that Eko died for a reason. Locke is taking a little detour.
Back to the rock quarry. There's a "breach in the compound".
AIIIIIEEEEEE! ALex with a slingshot!
What? Alex with a slingshot?
She's being dragged away. Evidently her boyfriend (Chachi?) got killed. She's screaming at Kate to not believe the Others (oh really?) and that they are going to "Kill her boyfriend".
But which one?

Back on the rock quarry. Juliet is walking over to Kate, smirk on her face. "Put the hood on Kate or Danny will kill Sawyer" is the basic message. But if she puts the hood on, perhaps she can stop the killing. More games from Juliet!
Flashback. Kate in a wedding dress. And here's her mom - I'm assuming all this is before Kate killed her stepdad.
Kate's real name is Monica, by the way. And I guess this isn't Kate's mom, it's the groom's mom. [later edit: And Kate's fake name is Monica. I am just not very bright!]
During the ceremony. Kevin loves "Monica" because "What you see is what you get". Which tells me that he's not particularly bright. But Monikate looks pretty happy. She's a hard nut to crack.
Now they are leading Kate into the aquarium. Jack stands up. (Matthew Fox, by the way, is doing some great acting here). Jack is, you can tell, really happy to see Kate (although they can't hug because she's on the other side of the glass). Jack asks after Sawyer, which make me like Jack even more.
"Did they hurt you?"
Kate starts to cry. We still don't know what she's been through. Kate tells Jack that if he does what they've asked him they won't kill Sawyer. Man, the Others' little game is starting to play out.
Jack's kind of being a jerk about it.
Ben's watching in those funky John Lennon glasses of his. He doesn't like what he's seeing.

Flashback: Kate in the store. Happily married, she and her policeman hubby are sharing some cute newlywed banter.
It's raining. Ever notice that they associate Kate and rain alot on this show? I wonder why?
She's in a phone booth, and she's calling the Marshall (the one who died on the beach).
"I don't want to run anymore." I think Kate sincerely loves her husband. The Marshall has promised to stop chasing her if she really stays put, really settles down.
"But you and I both know that's not gonna happen". He knows Kate well.
Back in the cages. "Where's sawyer". And it looks like they are going to kill Sawyer. Or at least cold-cock him. Danny insinuates that this is Sawyer's last day on earth, because he tells him that if he has anything to say to Kate he "best say it tonight"
"So, how was your day, honey?" - Sawyer, you're cool, even when doomed.
Eko's funeral. Locke is saying some appropriate words, and proclaiming again that Eko died for a reason.
He's banging in the "prayer stick" and stops. "Lift your eyes and look north" it says.
A message for Locke.
Back in the cages. Kate is telling Sawyer that he's gonna die. And she's breaking out. I have a feeling the naked scene is coming very soon.
Kate's busting him out! But Sawyer ain't runnin' - 'cause "There ain't no place to go". He's explaining the Alcatraz predicament to her.
He never told Kate because he wanted her to believe that they had a chance.
And here comes the sex . . . hide your eyes kids.

Random thought during commercials. Sawyer hasn't been beaten up, stabbed, shocked, operated on, or tortured yet [later edit: I forgot about the earlier cold-cocking by Danny. It's hard to keep track of all the beatings, frankly]. Plus Kate loves him temporarily. Aside from the fact that he's going to die tomorrow, he's having a really good day.

Flashback to the married couple, eating breakfast.
"Look under your plate." He seems like a really good guy. Two tickets on Oceanic to Costa Rica so they can have that honeymoon they've always wanted.
Back in the cages, awash in afterglow. Sawyer wants to know if she really loves him, or if she really just said that to get Danny to stop beating him up. She doesn't answer, but starts kissing Sawyer again.
"I love you too," Sawyer replies. Aw, Sawyer is smooth.
Back to the aquarium: Jack hears voices coming from the intercom. It's telling him to try the door (which is unlocked). Was that Alex's voice?
Jack has free reign, and he's in the TV control center.
And he's found the gunrack! Oh, this is going to be interesting. Jack's now got a pistol. And he sees Sawyer and Kate mugging. And someone is behind him.
Ben! Who is pretty cool with a gun pointed at him. "If I were a betting man I would think she would have picked you".
But instead of blowing him away, Jack is offering to do the surgery. And he promises to get the tumor out and keep Ben alive, provided Ben gets him off the island.
I think they are psychiatric geniuses and they knew what seeing Kate and Sawyer together would do to Jack. Their wacky plan is starting to make sense to me. I am even wondering if the Juliet poster-board ploy isn't some other form of psychotic coercion.

Back in the honeymoon cage. And now directly to a flashback.
Kate is looking at a pregnancy test. She's pregnant! And not too thrilled about it, by the looks of things.
She's bringing Kevin some lemonade. He's working on cop stuff on his laptop. Out of the blue she's confessing her whole thing to him (about blowing up her stepfather, her name's not really Monica, etc). Wow - she's going to leave. Evidently I read the pregnancy test wrong - she says she "almost had a baby".
She drugged him - with the lemonade, evidently, so he just collapsed. She leaves him the locket his mom gave her on their wedding day that I forgot to write about earlier in this post. And she takes off.
Jack and Juliet are in the operating room. He is setting her straight on who's in charge. She says she's "always been very good at just following orders."
Ben asks if Jack is nervous. He says he doesn't get nervous.
Ben: "Whatever happens, everything will be very different, won't it?"
Ben asks Juliet if Alex has asked about him. She says no.
And "See you on the other side". Ben is out.
"Scalpel" - the surgery is on. Wait, I thought the tumor was in Ben's neck. But Jack's operating on his lower back. I'm confused. Can anyone help here?
Danny is going off all half-cocked to the honeymoon cage to get Sawyer. He doesn't trust Jack, obviously. And Sun killed Colleen. So the natural thing to do is go manhandle Sawyer.
Back in the operating room. Something's going wrong. Whoa. Jack has a plan. He's talking to Zeke - Jack has made an incision in Ben's kidney, and Ben will die in an hour unless Jack stitches him back up.
Back in the cages, I think Danny is going to kill Sawyer. I hope they don't kill Sawyer.
"This for Colleen, you blank blank blank!"
Luckily, the walkie talkie goes off. Zeke is telling Danny to hand the walkie to Kate.
OK, Jack. Is. The. Man. I admit it now. For this show at least.
Jack is talking to Kate, telling her that she and Sawyer will have an hour head start. He tells her that if she gets safe in the next hour to call him and tell him the story that he told her the first day they met.
Kate: "I CAAAANNNN'TTTT"
Jack: "KATE!!! DARNIT!!!! RUUUNNNNNN!!!!"
END OF SHOW. AAAAARRRRRRGHGHGHH!!!
OK, I give this show an "A" and I can't wait until February.
Also, Jack doesn't know about Alcatraz, evidently . . .

Lost - I do... Not a bad episode, I’m gonna recap it ala my last Heroes post, then add some questions and theories at the end, or maybe in the middle, and say goodbye to Lost until February *weep* Previously on Lost: Henry’s plan has gotten shot since Jac...
Did anyone else notice that Clay-Aiken-stylin hair on Benry in that opening scene with Jack?! Hah! He does bear a striking resemblance.
I might have missed all/part of an episode, but what ever happened with Sun and Jin and Sayid on the beach? Clearly Sayid made his way back. I think I missed what happened after Sun shot Colleen. ?
I don't think I get (or like) Kate. Maybe I'm just not totally convinced - of anything? - she says or does. Or it's the acting that's not convincing.
But agree with De about great acting from M Fox tonight.
13 weeks to wait?!!! ;
[...] De at Thinklings; “Sawyer hasn’t been beaten up, stabbed, shocked, operated on, or tortured yet [later edit: I forgot about the earlier cold-cocking by Danny. Does anyone remember what story Jack told when Kate was stitching him up on the beach?
Oh my goodness, this episode was amazing!
Oh, and about the story Jack told Kate...
In the very first episode of LOST Jack was hurt on his back and so Kate had to stitch him up. She said that she couldn't, so Jack told her this story of one time he was operating on this girl and he accidentally tore some tissue or something. He was scared to death, but he only let fear take over for three seconds. "1....2....3..." And then he just did what he had to do.
Did anyone notice this?
Jack: Give me your word. I want what I asked for before.
Ben: OK
Jack: I want off this island.
Ben: Done.
Gee, isn't jack gonna be ticked when ben gets him off the island, only to find out it's a different island. And he's gonna yell at Ben "you gave your word". And ben will say, yeah, and you are now off the island you were standing on when you said, "this island"
So obvious. :)
Maybe Jacob is the "real" leader referred to in episodes past. There was some insinuation that the buck didn't stop at Benry.
We watched this ep live for the first time in a while, so there were several things I couldnt' rewind to re-hear. I could've sworn I heard Alex say, as she was running through slingshotting like a crazy person, "They're gonna kill him like they killed Walt!"
But nobody referred to that bit of news again, so I guess I misheard.
I did hear the Jacob thing, though.
I liked Jack in this episode a lot. Surprise, surprise.
But I didn't like the way it ended. Needed a bigger cliffhanger to go into a three month break. I fully expected Sawyer to get killed. Not saying that's the sort of big bang ending I wanted, but it would have been something.
I am confused as to whether Jack's deal about getting off the island is just for him or for him and his friends. The fact that he pulled the kidney cut thing says he's not just thinking about himself.
Hey, how did Alex get to the other island? Is she a rogue entirely? Or is she part of The Others regularly, like sort of their lovable traitor sidekick or something?
How did Michael get from the compound to the "real" island last season without a boat?
I'm confused.
Jack is the bombiest of the bomb diggities.
"Jack is the bombiest of the bomb diggities."
Well, let's not get carried away. But I was impressed that he actually came up with a decently thought-through plan. Although he may regret not just blowing Benry away when he had the chance.
And his obvious concern for both Kate and Sawyer is a mark of a true leader. I may have to retract some of my earlier Jack-bashing.
But I have yet to hang the Tiger Beat poster of Matthew Fox up on my wall (unlike certain someones among the Thinklings)
"They’re gonna kill him like they killed Walt!"
Wasn't it Carl, her boyfriend, she was referring to?
Walt? Who's Walt? Oh yes, I remember, an unresolved plot thread from last season, once among the most important aspects of the show, now blessedly erased due to writer's block on the part of the show's creators and puberty.
Doggone it, don't you miss Michael bounding through the jungle screaming "WAAAAAAAAALLLLLLTTTTT!"
"How did Michael get from the compound to the “real†island last season without a boat?"
The compound Michael got to was the fake Otherville, and it's on the real island. It was the place where they pretended to be poor fish-eating one-gun losahs.
On Alex, I vote for "lovable traitor sidekick"
Great episode.
I'm sad that Monikate's Kevin won't be seen in more than this episode. He's shiny!*
(*for Firefly fans)
My thought at the restart date in February - I wonder if I'll be in the hospital having our baby on that day and if I am, will I be able to watch it live?
I recognized him immediately as the dude from "Firefly," but i never watched that show, so I didn't have any inside jokes to share. :-(
I vote for “lovable traitor sidekickâ€
So, like, she's a member of The Others. She just sometimes tries to free their captives and assaults them and stuff? That's kinda weird.
Hey, did anyone else notice Desmond looking on Jesusy in that fake preview of the upcoming episodes? The blinging light behind him and all that?
Alex is the daughter of Rousseau. Alex was taken as a child. I think Rousseau mentioned she hadn't seen her daughter in 16 years.
She appears to be with the Others, but not with them. She helped Clare escape from the baby harvesters.
It seems pretty obvious to me that while they might be on a separate island, there has to be some straight shot method of getting to the main isle. They had medical facilities set up for Clare, a completely set up fake town for Michael, and when the plane crashed, Benry tells his minions to run to find out what's up. Was their neighborhood on the main island? If so, there has to be some easy commute way for them to get back and forth from the day job at Zoo Island.
The submarine?
Okay, was Carl the boyfriend who Alex says they killed? And if so, why is she still one of the Others? And was he the dude in the cage across from Sawyer way back when? The dude who escaped?
Could Jacob be a psychic child from their stable of kidnapped children?
Or is he the dude with the eyepatch?
Jared, add Firefly (TV show) and Serenity (movie) to your Netflix queue. You will enjoy them. But make sure you watch Firefly first - Serenity is spoilerish for the TV shows. Unless you've already seen Serenity, then nevermind.

Nope, haven't seen either. "Serenity" was on HBO every hour for about three weeks straight :-), but I avoided it mainly because I figured familiarity with the TV show would be semi-necessary. May have to check those out . . .
I'm not certain why Alex is maintained as a servant girl thing. I've assumed that Carl is the guy who was across from Sawyer who tried to escape. I wonder if he was really killed. That would add more fodder to the Others being evil people thing.
Jacob as the eye-patch guy makes a lot of sense. That dude's face was never really explained. The idea that he would be at a place being filmed and have the ability to turn off the viewing makes sense that he would be one with enough power to create a list.
Speaking of Alex, what's up with her begging to see Benry??? He sure is stud (even with the clay aiken hair) - plus he asked about her right before he went under. Wonder why Juliet lied to him, other than the insinuation that she's a bitter ex herself.
Still confused what happened to sun, jin, sayid's rescue plan? Did they just retreat to island 1 and I missed it?
Re: Sun, Jin and Sayid
They just got back a couple of episodes ago, although only Sayid has shown his face.
I forgot about Benry asking about Alex. That was odd. I wonder if maybe he was a father figure to her or something. I think a love interest might be pretty creepy. Possibly, the obvious rift between Benry and Juliet stems from care of the children on the island. Maybe she wanted joint custody?
Still, her comment about following orders was quite interesting . . .
A minor niggling problem with MoniKate's wedding:
How does a girl get engaged and married, and yet have NO ONE FROM HER FAMILY at the wedding? Since Kate is a fugitive, that would be the case, right?
Sure, you can lay down a cover story about your parents getting killed in a car wreck or something. But what about extended family? Kate would have been able to invite absolutely no one she knew in her past life to the wedding. Wouldn't that make someone nervous/suspicious?
Guess the bride's side of the aisle was sparsely populated?
Not a big deal. Just something I thought about
Jen... I thought that Kate's back story meshed well with Our Mrs. Renyolds. shiny.
Jacob, I'm calling it, mr. eyepatch, and the bigger great man that benry was gushing about back in the armory.
I didn't read all the comments so I don't know if its already been brought up but did anybody notice the Others' reaction when Jack pulled the kidney slice thing? Juliette said in the last episode that they all wanted a change, and yet Zeke sounded very urgent when he relayed the message to Danny that he needed to keep Sawyer alive or Jack would let Ben die. And Danny seemed extremely concerned/surprised when he got the message. They didn't seem like they wanted him to die as Juliette said that they did. In fact they seemed very loyal to Ben. Were they just afraid of Jacob (whoever that is)? Was Juliette just trying to pull a fast one without the rest of the Others knowing (she did say, we need to make it look like an accident. Then again that could be so this Jacob guy wouldn't know that they had killed him on purpose)? Thoughts? Theories? Am I just reading too much into it?
Also, though I think Jack did pretty much carry this episode, I am not sure how much concern he had for Sawyer and Kate at the end of the episode (I certainly wouldn't call it obvious). It was only after he saw Kate and Sawyer lying next to each other naked that he agreed to do the surgery and his terms were "I want the H off this island". Granted he did make sure that Kate and Sawyer had time to run but they are still on an island. Assuming Jack still thinks that they are on THE island then the best they could hope for would be to get back to the beach. That does show concern in the sense that he wants to make sure they aren't hurt anymore but it he didn't request that they be let off the island too (and I don't see why he couldn't have, given that Ben's life is in Jack's hands). He could have another plan that he isn't telling us right now, but at the moment it looks like he wants to do the surgery and get out of there (probably not the case but its what it looks like at this point). Regardless, I'll admit that Jack was really cool in this episode. Does it forgive everything I hated about him in season 2? No, but if he keeps acting like he did last night I may have to start liking him.
De,
good questions about monikate's wedding. Here's another one for you: How did she get a marriage license? She would have had to show proof of who she is to the County Clerk. She seems to have been on the lam by herself with no help. So granted forged Driver's licenses are possible in TV land, but I would think it would have been very hard to have found fake ID that would fool her cop husband and the county clerk.
Andrew: Juliet said some of us, knowing that there are more than just the few at the station, she could have been speaking about more than those there. She knew the surgery would be watched by people loyal to Ben (Zeke and Pickett) so it would have to look like a mistake. Also the video was filmed, it appears, in her back 'home' house, I assume 'home' is back on the main island where the Others really live and an anti-Ben faction may exist.
The ability for Alex to get from 'home' to 'here' (aka Lostkatraz) was a mystery to Pickett, and according to Juliet they sent her back 'home'. So there is apparently a way back and froth between the main island and lostcatraz... Wondering if kate/sawyer/jack can find it, and/or Locke find it after Jack's plan fails. (c'mon it Jack's plan.. when has Jack's plans not failed... he's right up there is Sayid.)
Did anyone freeze the frame on TIVO and look up the Bible verses written on Eko's stick? I did...not that it made any sense but I did. Hubby said some of the numbers in the verses were "the numbers" aka Hurley's unlucky numbers????
Anyone catch that? I skimmed comments quickly due to bed/bath/suppertime but I didn't see it mentioned?
And yes, what is the Shephard on Jacob's list????
'Shepherd on Jacob's list' - Jack Shepherd aka Jack Alpha Doc. Who is Jacob is a mystery, could be someone either higher than or lower than Ben, but known by Pickett.
The verses on the stick are a mish mash, many of them have the 'numbers', I have a screencap of the stick here from the Locke episode earlier this season, the Lift your eyes and look to the north is a partial quote from Genesis 13:14 which is interesting.
I thought it was implied that Jacob had ordered the capture of Sawyer & Kate. Possibly because they were the greatest threat, or possibly because they needed punishment for their sins.
It seems that Benry added Jack to the list cuz he knew he needed him. Either Jacob didn't know Benry has the tumor, or he didn't care.
Whoa! Jack pulls a con on the Others! Sawyer would be proud.
Kate's on the lam and she decides to date and later marry A COP? What was she gorram thinking???
About that earlier episode where there's a refernce to the sub...maybe a long shot, but could "sub" be short for something other than "submarine" - like "subway?"
I think that what really made Jack angry in that scene in the monitor room was not seeing Sawyer and Kate on the TV screen, but realizing that Benry manipulated him into making his "escape" to that room.
It seems obvious to me that the stick message means that the northern part of the island is Branch Dharmidian Central, where, among other things, Lostkatraz is visible. Extrapolating from Kelvin's map, that puts the main crash site on the SE shore and the Tailie site on the SW shore.
Too soon for anything to be made of that storyline... look for a desmond centric flashback before that thread gets picked up. Only advanced 4-6 days since the hatch blew, while an airplane could be sortied out right away, there is some planing that needs to take place, maybe she'll send an advance plane then later we'll have a boat visit the island. Its coming, just too soon for it.
My wife's theory:
The others have a fascination with kids - kidnapping them all from the lostaways.
No kids seen with the others thus far.
Juliet is a fertility doc.
She theorizes the others can't have any kids, thus the desire to kidnap them to propagate their 'race', or whatever. So, Jack, Kate and Sawyer are chosen to be kidnapped, they put Kate and Sawyer together in the zoo, Juliet monitors Kate's cycle and when the time is right, they manipulate some magic between them hoping for a baby to result.
I mean, so you think it's a coincidence or an oversight that Kate can climb so easily out of her cage or that a couple bangs of a rock on the lock would break it open.
I'm not so sure about this idea, but it is intriguing.
De - The credit goes to my wife, she thought of it. :-P
Darrel - As far as 'fall finale', Jericho (yeah, I'm still watching it. It's still pretty lame, but my wife likes it so we watch.) is going to have one too next week.
That is a good theory!
I thought the EZ Escape Brand cage and EZ Rockbreak Lock were laughable. But if they somehow contribute to the storyline, I'll reconsider.
---
We're still watching "Jericho" too. It's not great, but I think it's better than most people are giving it credit for. It's somewhat of a hit for CBS, so someone is watching.
I think it's pretty good, actually, at least from a progressing story standpoint.
I think the best show on TV this season has actually been "The Office." They haven't had a bad season yet, and this season, with all that could go wrong with tidying up the Jim/Pam post-kiss thing, they've still been nothing short of brilliant.
Yeah, I have to admit that, on the bigger picture end of things, the story line in Jericho is fairly good. I find myself wondering what I would do if cut off from everything with no power and limited resources. If necessary, could I learn to grow my own food? Scary thought.
On a show by show, small picture scale, each episode is pretty weak & predictable. Every show has a Big Problem and a Narrow Escape. Whew.
So I'm torn on Jericho. The fact that my wife still likes is means I don't have to decide, she likes it I watch it. Just don't tell her I said I sorta like it. :-)

ok, who is jacob?
danny said "shepherd wasn't even on jacob's list."
did i hear that right? mystery of mysteries!
