- the NBC sitcom "The Office"
Just finished watching this week's Lost. No live-blogging yet (that would take mental energy I don't have), but a few observations, with spoilers, below.
***************
I really loved this episode. I have to admit that, of the characters in the Oceanic 6+1 (Sun, Aaron, Jack, Kate, Hugo, Sayid, and Ben), I'm really tired of Kate, Sun, Jack, Ben, and Sayid. The story on the mainland just doesn't make much sense to me - especially the part having to do with keeping Jeremy Bentham on ice so they can take him back too. So it was nice to have a non-mainland show, except for PenDes, of course. I'm liking their story; they even have their own Cholly!
I realize that for many of you, an episode without Jack's bearded, drinking, pill-popping, confused mug hoarding screen time is like a day without sunshine, but this was a nice respite. [Bill ducks] :-)
Things are starting to fill in. It's been finally confirmed that Richard is, indeed, immortal. Take his shoes off and I'll bet he's got only four digits. Charles Widmore's involvement in the island has also been confirmed, and wasn't he a world-class jerk when he was twenty? Faraday and C.S. Lewis have some nice emerging chemistry (so it's too bad that she's about to die from time-travel sickness. Would some Dramamine⢠help?), the dude who sees dead people - his name escapes me at the moment - is fantastically dour, and Sawyer and Juliet are in absolute rare form right now.
Desmond showed a spine in dealing with Widmore. So did Locke in this ep.
Faraday has evidently spent a lot of time bouncing around, well, time. And he's got some skeletons in his closet as well.
I hope C.S. Lewis doesn't die.
And, as always, the Lostie redshirts continue dying in droves. Are there any left? It appears not. I miss Forgurt . . .
Great episode. What did you think?

I really liked this episode, too.
Initial thoughts:
It's nice to have confirmation that Widmore is an other. I wonder if his other-ness extends to Penny and how much she knows. I also wonder if Faraday isn't a lovechild between Widmore and the Priestess, another other.
I think the woman who held the gun to Faraday while he was looking at the bomb is his own mother. ZING-A-ROO.
Ben is not an other - outside of Widmore and Priestess lady (whose name I can't remember), are there any other others not on the island? Abaddon comes to mind.
Good call on the four-toes thing.
It appears that the others age when not on the island. A bit of never-never land thrown in for good measure.
I like the romance, too, Bill - not too easy or too side-story. It started last season, after all, and gives her dying a bit more gravitas.
I LOVE THAT THEIR BABY'S NAME IS CHARLIE!
I'm not tired of any character right now. I still love me some Benry craziness. Next week's show is going to be ulsome.
Here's a theory that may or may not have already been posed:
Widmore rebelled and got off of the island and now wants back to harness its powers. The priestess was sent to fight him (or maybe there were good intentions initially). Either way - it's turned into an Obi Wan v. Vader thing. Ben is young skywalker, in the sense that the priestess is guiding him.
I guess Hurley doesn't get busted out next week? hmmmm.
WHERE IS JIN?
It may not be that any of them are technically "immortal", right? I mean, they may just have been controling the time travel and therefore show up in several places in time, appearing immortal.
But I guess the 4 toe thing has to come in somewhere, so maybe they are immortal.
Geez. I have to quit trying to figure this thing out and go along for the ride. I feel like an addict.
@ Quaid - you think the girl with the gun (and what was a woman doing with an army with a gun in 1954?) was Faraday's mum? I thought she looked an awful lot like Teresa...
"It may not be that any of them are technically "immortal", right? I mean, they may just have been controling the time travel and therefore show up in several places in time, appearing immortal."
I've thought that too, but Juliet explicitly said Richard is "very old". And with her complete Other-creds established (the Latin was totally cool, no?) I believe her.
WHERE IS JIN?
Dead, last time I checked.
Which brings me to a big conundrum. Why is Gangsta-Sun making common cause with Widmore to kill Benry, when WIDMORE IS THE ONE WHO'S GOONS KILLED JIN?!?!?
That makes no sense. Can anyone explain?
Also, is Sun's dad an Other too? I was hoping to see some young, Korean Other-soldier at Other-camp, hanging out with Richard.
I think Richard is swiftly becoming the central fulcrum on which the show turns.
Also - prediction: I predict that somewhere in the last season (probably the last show) the Island is going to be destroyed by the Jughead bomb, which has long lain dormant under the surface of the island.
And I know I got "lain" wrong there. I don't know the grammar rules around "to lay"
I'm wondering about the back story on Widmore. Stewardess Cindy(?) was "drafted" into the Others camp. I assume Charles and the rest were drafted at some point in history as well. I don't think they are all old like Richard. What is his reason for being there to begin with?
Questions and more questions...
I'm guessing at this point that Richard is not human. He's of an ancient, immortal (or at least slow-aging) alien race. I think there may be a few others of like kind (Mikhail, and possibly Mrs. Klugh). Alien technology is where all the strange properties of the island come from.
Jacob is some kind of overlord of the aliens.
Richard recruits humans, but they are specially chosen. Hand-picked. Juliet is an example, as is Ben and Locke.
What his ultimate purpose is, I don't know.
I liked that they "set up" a scene that we have already seen. Alpert testing Locke as a child. Now, why did Locke fail that test?
Bill:
Lie, lay, have lain: when you're lying still not doing anything, like a bomb under an island.
Lay, laid, have laid: when you're moving from a not-lying position to a lying position, like when you lay down to go to bed for the night, or you lay a rug on the floor.
So full points to you!
OK, You people have GOT to see this!
Theory about Daniel Faraday's Mother.
Hey, guess what? The two soldier boys who attacked the Lostaways on the beach (RIP Frogurt) have a secret language: Latin! More shocking: Juliet is fluent! When Latin is spoken, doesn't it sound like every word has two or three extra syllables, like Gibberish?
Whoa, Shrode, great video! Someone did their research. Gosh, sometimes I feel like I sit and watch Lost like a total moron, I miss so much.
The bomb-introduction bothers me. I feel like it's adding more complexity and it's not fun. My husband thinks the radiation is the cause of the bloody noses.
Did anyone notice the comotoase (argh, girl-in-a-coma, I can spell that!) goes to childhood, and to a few years ago? Perhaps she's not in a coma, but just time-traveling constantly.
Sawyer is super cool, but Juliet seems so bland, non-plussed. Why is she so burned-out? Plus, I wish she'd close her blouse. We're all distracted by her odd cleavage.
My daughter thinks the music was way overdone when Richard comes out of the tent when Locke walks into the camp yelling for him. Check it out, it is kind of funny, like DaDaDADAAAA!!!! I mean, no one is shocked it's Richard in there.
Did anyone else feel super nervous the way the girl pointed the gun constantly? Man, she needs to take a gun-safety class.
I missed the Oceanic 6, but not Kate, who we think way over-plays with Aaron. No mom or caregiver is that fun.
Yes, Jared, Whidmore was super-jerk as a young man, I just wanted to slap him, but did you notice a softer-human side in his office at the end? I wonder if Ben is going to kill Penny. They're just too happy.
Miles is really growing on me in an irritating way.
Faraday and Lewis lack chemistry. They need the Lost sad music to play behind their moments or I can't buy into their love. What a non-glamorous way to die, with your nose bleeding like that. I wish Kate would die that way or at least get an occasional nosebleed to humble her.
All of this Kate-hate is nauseating. It's really not that bad. You act as if she's ruining the entire show . . .
I dont' think the girl with the gun is Teresa because the girl in the present said that she was talking to her father who had died five years ago. I don't see how she could know her father in that way off of the island if she were an other.
The thing mentioned in the comments that I hadn't thought about was the conscription of new others, such as the stewardess. That's an interesting twist that makes it difficult to discern who belongs to the island and who was brought in. While Ben and Locke are others in the sense that they identify with that group of people, I don't consider them purely other.
We still haven't figured out what it means to be "good" right? As in, "We're the good guys, Michael." (Just thinking of that line makes me want to watch Season 2 again)
Shrode - the video was taken down. Can you explain what was in it? Is it somewhere else we can watch it?
Jin is not dead. I don't know why I believe that, I just do. He's so not dead. What/Where/When he is, I don't know, but he's not dead. Does Sun even know that Widmore was behind the boat? How did the Losties come across that info? I know Ben spoke with Locke about it, but when did Sun ever come up with that information? For all she knows, Ben is the one who arranged everything. OR - as you've mentioned, maybe Mr. Paik knows something we don't know. I agree that he is more a part of the story than we understand. He was in Bad Twin for goodness sake.
I don't know that the others are immortal - just that they don't age like everyone else does.
Lastly - at the end of the second ep (or the two-hour premiere, depending on your POV), Ben mentions to Jack to take whatever he wants because he's not coming back. Is the insinuation that Jack dies or that the Oceanic 6 don't return from the island? Is Desmond required to go back? I sense that he is. If he goes, will he get to see Charlie/Penny again? If they go with him, that's incentive for Widmore to keep the island afloat.
All of this Kate-hate is nauseating. It's really not that bad. You act as if she's ruining the entire show . . .
She is. She just is.
Is the insinuation that Jack dies or that the Oceanic 6 don't return from the island?
Jack is the Adam part of the Adam and Eve skeletons. I just know it. So, yes, he's toast.
I don't know that the others are immortal - just that they don't age like everyone else does.
Then how come Mikhail keeps coming back to life? He's come back to life at least twice.
Shrode - the video was taken down. Can you explain what was in it? Is it somewhere else we can watch it?
Don't watch it. All the Lost Meta stuff is just a ruse. I've known people who spend all their time on all the easter egg stuff, Hanso site, etc. They never know anything more about what's going on than I do, and usually are a good sight more confused. Stick to the show.
[Bill is amazed at how curmudgeonly he sounds these days and goes off to kick his dog]
Quaid, try the link again. It's still working for me.
Bill, I agree. This is not meta-lost. It is the actual episode. It's just a 30 second youtube clip from the show itself. Go look.
It makes a strong arguement that the woman holding the gun in 1954 is Faraday's mother. A real strong arguement from STUFF THAT'S ALREADY IN THE SHOW IN PLAIN VIEW. Just trust me, Bill. Go watch it... please!
Quaid, I know, I admit I felt sort of bad saying I wish Kate would die of a nosebleed. OK, I wish the gospel would reach her and then she'd die of a nosebleed.
I don't know what it is with the women on Lost, I think I've said this before; Neither their characters nor their friendships with each other are as interesting and real as the men. Rose was cool till she and Bernard started bickering constantly. I like Claire, but she's sort of gone, and was really just OK, not as real as Charlie, pale next to him. Penny is probably the most genuine. They just don't seem to get good lines to make them loveable and intriguing. Oh, you know who was cool, was Helen, but again, not an ongoing character.
It makes a strong arguement that the woman holding the gun in 1954 is Faraday's mother.
I didn't snap to that idea on my own, but after talking to some people and reading the forums (ok, ok, I do that) I think you're right.
Now, is the woman with the gun a younger version of Ms. Hawking?
For the record, I put two and two together about Faraday's mom BEFORE reading any forums or seeing Shrode's video (which I totally mentioned in comment #2!!!) [Quaid finished patting himself on the back]
So let's explore the Adam/Eve theory. Is the idea that:
The people travel back and forth in time on the island. If they die, they become a part of the island and stay in that time. So, you think that at some point in the series, the Losties will travel back in time (with the Oceanic 6 having already returned to the island), and Jack and Kate will die? What about Kate and Sawyer? What about Bernard and Rose (who decided they never wanted to leave the island)? What about Jin and Sun or another couple?
I suppose that you would say that since Jack and Kate are the two primary characters that Adam and Eve could only have been them. I just don't think that the two of them will die to be discovered by themselves. That's just weird.

Faraday and C.S. Lewis have some nice emerging chemistry
I'd have to disagree. They're relationship is so obvious, yet so random. It's too side-story for me.
