"As they passed the rows of houses they saw through the open doors that men were sweeping and dusting and washing dishes, while the women sat around in groups, gossiping and laughing. "What has happened?" the Scarecrow asked a sad-looking man with a bushy beard, who wore an apron and was wheeling a baby-carriage along the sidewalk. "Why, we've had a revolution, your Majesty -- as you ought to know very well," replied the man; "and since you went away the women have been running things to suit themselves. I'm glad you have decided to come back and restore order, for doing housework and minding the children is wearing out the strength of every man in the Emerald City." "Hm!" said the Scarecrow, thoughtfully. "If it is such hard work as you say, how did the women manage it so easily?" "I really do not know," replied the man, with a deep sigh. "Perhaps the women are made of cast-iron.""

LOST Liveblog: "The Substitute"

Bill may be liveblogging the ep too, but I'm gonna give it a whirl tonight. Maybe it'll be fun to compare/contrast our takes.
Might be a slight delay here and there even though I'm trying to watch it live, b/c I'll be doing so via DVR and pausing here and there as I go.

Tonight's ep is called "The Substitute." I wonder if Tom Berenger is in it.

Blue van pulling into Desperate Housewives' neighborhood?
It's 2-wheel-drive Locke. Flashback or flash sideways?

Locke has a woman in the flash sideways, and it's Peg Bundy! (Or Leela, if you prefer, for the "Futurama" fans. I bet there's a lot of mutual "Lost" and "Futurama" fans.)

Coffee in the bathtub is awesome.

"Jack Shephard, spinal surgeon. You are my density. I mean, you are my destiny."

The rolling cam footage reminds me of "Raising Arizona."

Backflashsideways: We're in Otherville on the island now. Fauxlocke has a machete.

Wait - what? I thought Richard Alpert got shot last episode or something. Or just beat up by Fauxlocke, right?

Everyone reading this is gonna "benefit" from my terrible memory.

(Commercial)

Is Locke's boss Wolverine?

I really don't like Locke normally. But I also don't like him all timid and picked-on either.
I guess I just don't like Locke period. Especially when he's trying to murder his new wife and stepdaughter. (That's an obscure movie reference, btw.)

Wolverine fires Locke.

I was DM'ing with @JonMcIntosh during the Locke/Alpert convo so totally missed it. I'm sure they explained the numbers or something.

Ben is telling AnaLucia 2.0 about Fauxlocke being the Black Smoke Monster.

The music they're playing while AnaLucia 2.0 is pouring the sand inside the little bag sounds very "Raiders of the Lost Ark"-ish. Strains of the theme playing during the Well of Souls sequence. And the bag filling reminds me of opening sequence of Raiders where Indy has to replace the idol in that cave.

Fauxlocke greets Sawyer. "Thought you were dead." "I was."
Not as chilling as it probably looked on the page.

(Commercial)

(The "Look at him, now me" Old Spice commercial is hilarious.

(I really want to see this "Brooklyn's Finest" movie. My kind of thing.

(I wonder if "Flashforward" could try to look any more like "Lost.")

Back. Sawyer is getting his drink on.
Looks like he soiled his boxers.
"Here's to bein' dead."

Sawyer: "Who are you? 'Cause you sure as Hades ain't John Locke."
Fauxlocke: "What if I told you I was the person who could answer the most important question in the world?"

The question is: "What the heck is going on on LOST?"

Flashsideways:
2WD Locke can't get into his van.

Whoa! Flashsideways Hurley!
He owns the company. (I'm not digging the afro'd muttonchops.)
Hurley gives him his job back.

Back to the island:
AnaLucia 2.0 is dropping to Sun that she knows about Jin.

Jeff Fahey's hair is glorious.

Sawyer and Fauxlocke trekking. They run into one of the Swiss Family Zombiesons or something. They give chase.
Is he one of the Lost Boys? (Get it! Haha.)

"You know the rules," the Lost Boy says. "You can't kill him."
(Who? Sawyer?)
Fauxlocke says: "Don't tell me what I can't do." Then he yells it.

Okay, that was pretty creepy cool.

(Commercial

("Shutter Island" was a good book. The movie looks awesome.)

Sawyer is looking for Fauxlocke.
Alpert shows up. Wonder if he's related to Herb. Maybe he's one of the Tijuana Brass.
Alpert flees. Fauxlocke scares him off.

"What kid?"
"Right."

I hope somebody kills Fauxlocke. Me no likey him guy.

Flashsideways: Locke at some kind of evaluation. "What kind of animal would you describe yourself as? . . . Would you describe yourself as a people person?"

I'd describe him as a Freak People Out Person.

Rose is the supervisor. Nadler is an awful last name.
But I love Rose.

Locke wants to work construction. Rose wants him to be realistic.
She does have cancer in the flashsideways. Not happy about that.

"How about we find you a job you can do?"
Like throwing knives at stuff.

Back on island:
Sawyer and Fauxlocke still trekking. Sawyer waxing poetic about Steinbeck's "Of Mice and Men."
Sawyer pulls his gat.
Fauxlocke tempts him to pull the trigger.
Can you smoke the Smoke Monster?

Sawyer: "What are you?"
Fauxlocke: "What I am is trapped."

(Commercial)
(the commercials seem to be coming pretty quick tonight

("The Bounty Hunter" looks like cinematic toe cheese)

Ben and AnaLucia 2.0 are carrying Deadlocke. He doesn't look too heavy.

They come to a cemetery. "Anybody want to say anything? Didn't you know him?"

Ben speaks. "John Locke was a . . . believer, a man of faith, a much better man than I will ever be, and I'm very sorry I murdered him."

You don't get speeches like that on "The Bachelor," people.

Flashsideways:
Locke wakes up to alarm clock. Ponders his head in mirror all Brando-like.

Business card for Jack. Now I realize why this episode is lacking in serious awesomeness -- we haven't seen Jack yet.

Locke's lost luggage gets delivered. All his knives, I guess.

Peg/Leela wants to know how he got fired.
"Open the case, Helen."
"What are these for?"
"My walkabout. An adventure in the outback. Man against nature. But they wouldn't let me go."

It's just now occurred to me that the flashsideways is what would have happened if the plane didn't crash. I know -- I'm an idiot. I thought it was sort of like a "new" alternative timeline. Didn't occur to me that it was just the old timeline uninterrupted.

But wait -- Desmond was on the plane, right? And no Shannon.

Now I'm really confused.

I'm ready for Nicki and Paulo to come back.
Well, really just Nicki.

Locke says there's no such thing as miracles. He and Leela snog.

Back on the island:
Sawyer and Fauxlocke reach bayside. Where's Lisa Turtle?

Climbing down a tree-limb ladder. It's all very Robinson Crusoe.
Ladder breaks, Sawyer drops/swings. Doesn't fall off. Riiight.
Fauxlocke saves him.
They climb down and reach a cave.
Sawyer: "What is this place?"
Fauxlocke doesn't answer. He lights a torch and they walk further into the cave.
He shows Sawyer something. Names carved on roof of cave.
Fauxlocke: "That, James, is why you're all here."

(Commercial)

(Okay, I really want to see this "Crazies" movie too. Me likey the zombies.

("Wolfman" on the other hand looks redonkulous.)

Flashsideways:
2WD Locke is coaching a basketball team practice.
Oh, he's a substitute. He does have a Tom Berenger thing going on.
Looks he did a health class too.

Wait, what? Ben is at the school.

"Ben Linus, European history."
"John Locke, substitute."
"Well, welcome."

Back at island:

Sawyer: "Who wrote all this?"
Fauxlocke: "His name was Jacob."
...
Sawyer: "Why are all the names crossed out?"
Fauxlocke: "There not all crossed out."
Sawyer: "Shephard. Would that be Jack Shephard?"

Names are the Oceanic survivor peeps that met Jacob at some point in their lives.
Wayback flashback to Jacob giving the little Sawyer a pencil or whatever it was.

Fauxlocke explaining how Jacob was manipulating everybody, showing up in their lives.

"Why would he do that?"
Fauxlocke: "Because. You were a candidate."
Sawyer: "A candidate for what?"

Jacob sees himself as a protector of the island. And he thinks the names are of candidates for replacing him. (This is all according to Fauxlocke.)

Three choices:
You do nothing.
You become the protector.
You leave the island.

Fauxlocke: "What do you say, James? Are you ready to go home?"
Sawyer: "Purgatory yes."

LOST

Preview looks like next week we get Jack back in fine yelling form.

Kinda ho-hum about this episode. Didn't stink. But not exceptional.

Comments on "LOST Liveblog: "The Substitute"":
1. Bill - 02/16/2010 8:33 pm CST

If you're liveblogging, there's no need for me to. I'll just watch :-)

2. Bill - 02/16/2010 9:33 pm CST

Just finished watching it. Then read your liveblog - hilarious! Did you come up with 2WD Locke? Epic.

I enjoyed this ep WAY more than last week's. No Kate. And (1,000 apologies to the live-blogger) no Jack either. And - quadruple-especially - no John Lennon and the Plastic Ono Temple this week.

And, for all the people who kept complaining about never getting any answers, we got some (or at least clarification as to where this is going).

So, is the little kid a higher level of island deity than SmokeLocke?

Also - MIB was once a man. Wants to get off the island. I'm still not convinced that he's bad (although he might be, sure).

I liked the fact that LockeZombie saw the mysterious visitor, just like Original Locke might have.

I thought Ben's speech at Locke's gravesite was awesome.

Also, I don't think Alterna-world is what would have happened if they hadn't crashed. I think it may be what would have happened if Jacob had never gotten into their heads. They all (except for Kate) seem a bit more well-adjusted. Jack's happy (and didn't go completely crazy-eyed over the lost casket). Locke is demonstrably less hopeless than before. And did Peg mention his dad coming to the wedding? Weird.

More thoughts as I think 'em.

3. Evan - 02/16/2010 9:37 pm CST

Yeah, I am kinda neutral about this episode too. The show seems to be going into full comic book mode, and I'm getting the Norse mythology vibe again, especially with the jungle kid showing up and talking about "the rules" again.

We also got more tie in with "the numbers", with Jacob apparently having assigned one of each of the 6 numbers to the people he touched (i.e. Jack, Locke, Sayid, Sawyer, Hugo, and either Sun or Jin). Interesting that Kate was touched, but her name wasn't shown in the cave as far as I could tell. Not that any of this really adds meaning to the numbers anyway.

The flash-sideways things are still ambiguous and pretty boring. As for why additional things are different (i.e. Desmond was on flight 815, Ben is a teacher, Ethan is a kind doctor, etc.), I think the idea is that since Juliet blow up the bomb back in 1977 and sunk the island, all those characters lives obviously are different in the subsequent 30 years as well. But I think it is pretty clear the writers are keeping the whole thing ambiguous for some future reveal or explanation.

I did like Ben's funeral speech and Frank Lapidas' comment after it. I guess it is also interesting that Ben lied to Iliana and denied killing Jacob, but told the truth about murdering Locke.

4. Bill - 02/16/2010 9:39 pm CST

Plus (continuing from my previous comment), Locke in alterna-verse is happily living in sin with Peg, versus being a delusional loser the way he was in pre-crashed on the island flashbacks. Hurley seems happier too. And far more in control of his situation. Maybe they ARE all better off.

Except for Kate, who's still an extremely annoying convict on the lam, and Claire, who still panics at . . . everything.

Charlie didn't seem to happy either, disappointed that his suicide attempt failed. So, maybe my theory's shot.

5. Bill - 02/16/2010 9:43 pm CST

Oh, and also . . . now I get "the substitute". Locke . . . a substitute teacher.

I really wonder what the point will be to the alternate timeline stories in LA. I know there will be a point. Just wonder what.

6. Evan - 02/16/2010 9:45 pm CST

By the way, a big raspberry to the writers on making Batmanuel a clueless, frightened little girl all of a sudden.

I missed the 2WD Locke reference first time reading this - that one is a keeper. The other fan nickname I have seen that I like is calling the fake Locke the 'Lockeness Monster'.

7. Bill - 02/16/2010 9:47 pm CST

Best line of the night was Sawyer's: "I don't give a darn if you're dead . . . or time travelling . . . or . . . [big smile] the Ghost of Christmas Past!"

8. Bill - 02/16/2010 9:49 pm CST

The Lockeness Monster - awesome! I love DeadLocke too.

9. Bill - 02/16/2010 9:51 pm CST

"By the way, a big raspberry to the writers on making Batmanuel a clueless, frightened little girl all of a sudden."

Well, I think he's undone by the fact that Jacob's dead, and also because he knows that he's the mook who led Lockeness to Jacob.

10. Bill - 02/16/2010 9:59 pm CST

(Sorry for carpet-bombing this thread with comments, btw). . .

I thought the scale with the white rock and the black rock (he he) on it was pretty cool, especially when Locke threw the white rock out of the cave door and said "inside joke".

Locke: "What I am is trapped" - that was pretty cool too

11. Sherry Early - 02/16/2010 10:15 pm CST

So why did MIB get into/take over Locke if he's going to be trapped there? Iliana said that he can't move on to another body.

And why, oh why, is Sawyer being such an idiot? Good move, plot-wise, but I was talking to the screen before Richard warned him, telling Sawyer not to go to the Dark Side, not to follow Darth Locke. And that ladder should have stopped him in his tracks. It would have put an end to any desire I had to tag along behind DeadLocke.

12. jen - 02/17/2010 9:03 am CST

Three non-LOST things:

1. I loved that first Old Spice ad. Absolutely hilarious and made me LOL.

2. Loved Shutter Island book. So excited about Shutter Island movie, but I'll have to wait for the DVD. Sadness.

3. I guess I'm not the only one who thinks of Locke-actor as The Stepfather every time I see him?

Me no likey sullen Sawyer. Ben's eulogy was awesome, as said by others.

And I deleted Monday's ep of 24. (That's for Bill.)

13. Shrode - 02/17/2010 9:38 am CST

I mostly think of Terry O'Quinn (actor who plays Locke) as the "CAG" from JAG. I still see him that way, though occasionally there are flashes of him as Howard Hughes from "The Rocketeer". (Never saw "The Stepfather)

I think O'Quinn was in "Silverado" too. As I go back, the dude has been in all sorts of stuff we've all seen, we just didn't know it. The character's actor's character's actor.

14. Shrode - 02/17/2010 9:53 am CST

OK, not Silverado, but Young Guns and Tombstone and American Outlaws. But if you look at this list it's pretty impressive. I'll bet we all saw this guy before we knew him as Locke.

I'll forever think of him as the "CAG".

15. Shrode - 02/17/2010 10:49 am CST

I didn't know til I saw this that the title of the episode was "The Substitute."

Cool double meaning. Jacob has been looking for a "substitute" guardian of the island, and thought Locke was it before he got killed. And Locke is a substitute teacher.

Listen up people, I'll say it again: The "flash sideways" is what would have happened if the plane hadn't crashed. Yes, there are slight differences, that I'm sure will be explained.

It's like the "restored timeline" at the end of back-to-the-future I. Things are not exactly the same as they were, but "close enough".

16. Quaid - 02/17/2010 3:34 pm CST

"Listen up people, I'll say it again: The "flash sideways" is what would have happened if the plane hadn't crashed. Yes, there are slight differences, that I'm sure will be explained."

Okay, I'll bite. If this is the case, what are we seeing on the island and what happens to all the people?

I don't buy two ongoing realities.

I think that it might be a combo of a flash sideways and what happens at the end of the island meaning that the end of the island somehow propels them into that reality - (although I have no idea how they would make that work).

BTW - I really liked this episode. It's really interesting to see where all these people end up in Dharma-less/crashless time, whatever that means.

17. Bill - 02/17/2010 4:44 pm CST

Shrode, I'm not with you (yet) - you may be right, but I prefer one reality, not two.

Also, slight nitpick: Locke subbed at what looked to be a junior high. It was AWESOME seeing Ben Linus in altaverse! But how many junior highs have a teacher specialized to "European History". I wonder - that seemed to be deliberate (although deliberate for what reason I don't know). I really like alternate-Ben (although I really like (not on a moral level, just because he rocks as a character) Island murderer/liar/manipulator Ben too.

It's nice to think of Ben not being the heart of darkness, and just being a really good, if quirky, history teacher.

Still working out whether I think Jacob is good or not...

18. Bill - 02/17/2010 4:47 pm CST

Oh also, I couldn't figure out why they were so keen to drag Locke's corpse all the way back to the original lostie graveyard but just left Bram and the other dead Jacob-protectors dessicating in the foot.

19. Andrew - 02/18/2010 10:14 am CST

It's like the "restored timeline" at the end of back-to-the-future I. Things are not exactly the same as they were, but "close enough".

I don't know about LOST, but as a Back to the Future fan, I resent that! Everything changed, and it was all the result of him messing with the reality of 1955. It wasn't a restored timeline, it was a completely different timeline. If there is any parallel, then it must be shown that something happened in the past to change their trajectories for the future. If not, LOST is in no way comparable with Back to the Future.

Personally, I think the producers are too cocky to do a slightly alternate future, and explain it as "this is just what would have happened if the plane never crashed." I can't imagine that for the rest of the season, we're just going to watch two realities that never tie into each other, and have nothing to do with each other. The writers have shown that they have stupid ideas sometimes (the entire first half of Season 3, for instance), but they aren't tone deaf. People will riot if the alternate timelines are not explained adequately. I can't imagine that the writers don't understand that.

20. Michele - 02/18/2010 12:19 pm CST

Did anyone understand Ilayna's little speech about Locke as they carried his body to the graveyard? She said he was "stuck" now, or something like that. Does she mean whoever is in Locke's body, (wish they'd give that guy a handle) is now forever there?
Also, wasn't the crab on Locke's dead head a particularly nice touch?

21. Alan K. Henderson - 02/18/2010 12:25 pm CST

I agree that the plane not crashing is insufficient to produce the alternate timeline - if for no reason because of Hurley. He felt cursed, and that he was spreading his curse to others by helping them. That's not the alternate-Hurley we're seeing. Life without ever being touched by Jacob makes more sense.

Or maybe something went wrong. Maybe Faraday was right - history can be changed, but he did not foresee that the result would be a time fracture with two parallel realities. Mrs. Hawking sent five of the Oceanic Six to fulfill their place in history, but something different happened, or something that was supposed to happen didn't.

Is the fact that Aaron didn't return with the Oceanic Six significant?

22. Alan K. Henderson - 02/18/2010 12:27 pm CST

Michele,

MIB can now take only two forms: Locke and Smoke Monster. He can't take other disguises anymore.

23. Bill - 02/18/2010 4:38 pm CST

MIB can now take only two forms: Locke and Smoke Monster. He can't take other disguises anymore.

I find that confusing, though - because Locke = Smoke Monster has been going on since last season. And SmokeLocke has manifested himself (or at least it seems that this is the case) as Christian, as Alex, etc. Remember Alex threatening Ben that he had better do everything that Locke says? Alex was (if memory serves) pretty obviously Smokey - didn't he show up right after or right before she did?

Something else may be going on there. Just haven't heard a good explanation yet.

24. GinH - 02/18/2010 6:13 pm CST

I think MIB can only be SOLID and truly physical in one form, I don't think that he can't show up in other forms. Could that be true for Jacob now, too? Maybe he just can't be physical anymore? Who was the boy? Was that Jacob?

And can anyone recall if there are different "smokes"? My husband thinks the smoke has always been black but I think I remember the smoke that "examined" Mr. Eko was white, not black. Maybe they're different?

As far as timelines, I agree with Andrew. The BTTF timeline was totally different because of what the kid changed in the past. It was completely different because his parents changed what kind of people they would be. As would be the case on LOST if they blew up the island, everyone would be completely different because they hadn't been "chosen" and numbered by Jacob.

Still don't know which one of those guys is good . . . this week made me lean toward Jacob, but I still have a hard time believing he's the good guy. But the MIB guy is so nonchalant and says things that make me wonder if he could be good. Maybe they're both bad and there is no ultimate good guy?

25. Michele - 02/18/2010 6:23 pm CST

GinH: I remember at some point, Locke saying he saw the smoke as beautiful, or "light".

26. brandontmilan - 02/19/2010 9:09 am CST

You have to remember that most of what happens prior to flight 815 is somehow connected to the island. Desmond's story is all wrapped up in Charles Widmore, who was an Other. Hurley's lotto numbers came from the crazy guy who heard them while stationed in the south pacific. They were the same numbers on the hatch. So that is why Hurley is not unlucky...

But speaking of those numbers, I can't believe no one noticed that the numbers next to the remaining names are the same as the hatch numbers.
4 - locke
8 - Reyes
15 - Ford
16 - Jarrah
23 - Shepperd
42 - Kwon

27. jen - 02/19/2010 10:15 am CST

I noticed the numbers next to the names. I forgot to mention it. I'm waiting to see what is revealed about that.

28. brandontmilan - 02/19/2010 11:17 am CST

I'm curious as to what numbers Hurley won the lottery with...

And I'm not sure that the other timeline is what would have happened without Jacob's involvement... I have an idea that Jacob is still involved somehow...

29. Bill - 02/19/2010 11:50 am CST

The numbers next to the names were explicitely pointed out by DreadLocke in the show.

30. Alan K. Henderson - 02/19/2010 1:07 pm CST

I wonder if there's anything significant about the order of the list.

Whoa, something just hit me - Kate and Ilana aren't among the names, and both met Jacob pre-island. Or (snicker) their future names *are* on the wall...

I'd say that's a stretch, but for this show nothing's a stretch.

31. Bill - 02/19/2010 2:54 pm CST

I read this conjecture somewhere: I believe in the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy that the answer to all questions is "42". I haven't read that book in awhile but that rings a bell.

That's the number for "Kwon"

Hmmm . . .

32. brandontmilan - 02/19/2010 4:50 pm CST

that's a good point, Bill... the more that I think about it, though Jin has been a slightly less important character, he has definitely been one of the most dynamic characters on the show...

I guess, though, that Kwon could refer to Sun as well?

33. TheCalvinator - 02/20/2010 6:22 pm CST

Was Locke 4? The numbers were 3, 8, 15, 16, 23, & 42. I already deleted this episode from the DVR, so I can't look back, but I'm pretty sure someone else was #3. So, if I am right, that leaves all 6 numbers still in play.

Shephard as #23? Pretty blatant allusion right there.

34. Bill - 02/20/2010 7:41 pm CST

Calvinator

Wait, the numbers were 4, 8, 15,16, 23, 42, not 3 . . .

Yes, I'm pretty sure Locke was 4.

What was the significance of the Shephard 23? I can't think of anything. Let me know what you're alluding to.

35. Jared - 02/20/2010 7:46 pm CST

Pretty sure he's referring to Psalm 23.

The Lord is my Shephard? :-)

36. Bill - 02/20/2010 8:06 pm CST

Ah . . . I get it.

The Lord is my Shephard? :-)

It's funny because it's true (for you :-) )

37. Bill - 02/20/2010 8:16 pm CST

On that note, I hope they resolve the Inscrutable Kung-Fu Poison Pill Temple soon . . .

I'm pulling for Jack to complete his redemptive conversion from his man of science to a man of faith . . . and his (I'm predicting) eventual self-sacrifice for the good of his friends.

38. TheCalvinator - 02/27/2010 10:04 am CST

D'Oh!

Can't believe I mis-remembered the numbers.
