Moot!

Just finished seasoning my steaks for this year's Christmas Moot, and will be heading out soon.

I'm really looking forward to some major Mootage tonight with Rod, Bird, Blo, Shrode (note the naive hope with which I pen that name) and some honored guests.

Moot forevah!!!

Go in peace and don't come home too early.

Is there a link or something to which one may go to learn what Moot is, its history, purpose, goals, etc? Is there more than one Moot, geographically and/or chronologically? Is it a closed communion, or are Greeks and Barbarians found within its circle? How many souls are in the Mooterie? Are its members homogeneous, or more of a Mootley crew? Besides eating seasoned steaks, what goes on a Moot? Is there lively discussion wherein folks make brilliant Moot points (and counterpoints)? Are plans made for world domination, Pinky? What is the etymology or derivation of the word itself? Does it rhyme with "overshoe" or with "castle's protective ditch"? And finally, are those who attend it referred to as Mootlings, Mootations, Mootians, Mooterizers, Mooties, Mootsies, Mootites, Mootists, or Mooters?

Not having attended a moot, personally, I do know that it is derived from EntMoot from LOTR and is, therefore, pronounced phonetically. (Rhymes with "toot")

In the past, many chess matches were played, cigars were smoked and someone even threw up once. The best way to learn more is to click on the category under the post title (Moot!) and read all of the posts from MootPast.

Thank you for that kind, if a bit prosaic, reply, Quaid. Umm, just between you and me, how much scorn and derision would I incur if I admitted to having never read LOTR - and in fact, having to have asked someone (my son, actually) what the letters "LOTR" stood for?

NightTurkey - it's all good.

But do yourself a favor and go pick up a copy of LOTR now!

Also, as Quaid mentioned, the best way to get a flavor for Moot is to click on the Moot! category in the navbar. I particularly recommend the posts from 2006 as we live-blogged the Moot that year, and even had a video documentary of it.

Last night's Moot was the best one I can remember. I'm not saying there wasn't a better one somewhere along the way, but I can't think of one. 2006 comes close.
