and they won't buy me a cup of Starbucks on a Sunday morning at my church. ;-}
Bill, you know that pastor came out of Northwest, right?
Yes, I know. I used to know his parents.
He came to speak to our church on a Sunday night about four years ago. I didn't go, but heard mixed results. Came across as cocky - was wearing jeans and a t-shirt (nothing wrong with that but he made a big deal about how he knew that offended some people and he "didn't care"). Said that Christians spend too much time studying the Bible and not enough evangelizing (true if you look at it one way, but overall a bad message).
So, yes, he's a product of our church. Another black mark, I guess (you're the second person to point that out to me today :-)
On the other hand . . . as in every case like this, I am quite sure that a majority of the people at that church slaving away right now getting ready for this big upcoming event are doing it from a desire to reach the lost. Most likely people will get saved. I'm sure there's lots of good going on there, and lots of good hearts.
I just can't take part anymore in this kind of stuff.
Continuing this thought process . . .
My question: When does it stop? What could possibly top this next year? Maybe they'll be giving away houses (because if you think that's great, wait till you see the mansion God has for you!), or free trips to Hollywood to watch American Idol (because if you think that's great, wait until you meet Jesus, the REAL idol!), or maybe free trips into orbit (because knowing Jesus is OUT OF THIS WORLD!).
When does it end?
Yes, I'm sure that most of this comes from sincere desire, that he's a nice guy, and that he loves the lost and loves reaching them. He evangelizes more people in a week than I have in my entire life.
In fact, people in these churches look at people in churches like mine, holding our little good friday Lord's supper services and easter services and you know what they think? "Those people sure aren't willing to attempt big things for God". So it goes both ways.
But, yes, this is redonkulus. Not to mention - most likely a HUGE waste of cash that could have been used for things more useful to the Kingdom.
Also - my "another black mark" comment was meant to be taken with a wink wink :-) - I know what you were saying.
Ever wonder what day we Christians ought celebrate the Resurrection? Should it be on the first Sunday after the first full moon (check it out tonight) after the spring equinox (Mar 21st post Pope Gregory and the Gregorian Calendar)? (The more aware will note that defintion involves both solar events and lunar events, and hence the day will change from year to year. But from where did the definition come? And by what authority?)
Not a random, off the wall question. See, for example, God's change of Israel's view of time in Ex 12, especially vv1-2.
Which day is now for us to think of as Resurrection Day?
grand prize should be a cryonics gift card so some lucky winner gets to have their head frozen and experience "resurrection" somewhere in the future. because if if you think coming back to life in this world is cool, you just wait...
Who was it that said "What you win them with is what you win them to" ?
I wonder if they would try to feed 5,000 people don't have plenty to eat already, maybe offer some health care and dietary advice. Would that interest the people "who don’t normally go to church or those who have lapsed in their faith."
hahahaha... the string of comments is almost as crazy funny as the article itself.
My favorite:
Next prize should be tickets to Schlitterbahn. Because if you think flying down a water slide is cool, just wait til Jesus vomits you out of his mouth!
Jared, for that, I think YOU should win a car. :)

Bill - on that Sunday he said the following,
"Discipleship is overrated."
Those three words have bugged me ever since. Fill in the blank:
"Go, therefore, into all the world, making ___________ and baptize them in the name . . ."
Giving away cars on Easter is overrated.
Jared @14
I ref'd Ex 12 to circumvent the thrust of your response. That is, I hoped folks might find, upon checking the Book, that God, in at least one instance, insisted that Resurrection and Redemption demanded a new ordering of how one thought about time. This observation, I'd hoped, might inspire some (those driven by submission to the Book, most likely)to wonder about what might have happened when not the foreshadowing, but the actual arrived.
Put another way: What leads you to believe every day is the same? Extra credit for proof from the Book.
Put still another way: When rejecting bunnies and baskets, should we remain complacently untutored and unconcerned about that which gets the popular label 'Easter', up to and including its dating (which in the Eastern Church, eg, Greek Orthodox, differs from first Sunday after first full moon after spring equinox. 'course the East also has a different year calendar, too, but that's still another--can't resist--easter bunny trail).
"What you win them with is what you win them to"
I don't know, but I remember reading it before. It certainly is appropriate.
I'm sorry to be so outspoken, but I think this "giveaway" is beyond sick. A million dollars would go a long way towards feeding people who have nothing, or who are living under a tarp (hello, Haiti, we haven't forgotten you... oh, wait... maybe we have). Instead, let's collect it to lure in people who need for almost nothing and make church a big gimmick.
Leaves an awful, horrible taste in my mouth.
I don't think Jesus would approve. I mean he crashed tables to the ground in the temple - what would he do with this?
I'm being wry, of course. This disgusts me.
Wow, small world. I went to high school with this guy's wife, and we actually went out on a couple of dates together. Went over to the house, met her dad, had dinner with the family, etc. Really sweet girl, with a great heart. I've googled their church and ministry before and read about some of their unorthodox approaches to things, but this does kind of take the cake. Leaves me a little speechless. I kind of agree with Bill's comments. I'm convinced that this is well-meaning and borne (at least mostly) out of a sincere desire to reach the lost.
But . . .

The pain!!!!
