"As they passed the rows of houses they saw through the open doors that men were sweeping and dusting and washing dishes, while the women sat around in groups, gossiping and laughing. "What has happened?" the Scarecrow asked a sad-looking man with a bushy beard, who wore an apron and was wheeling a baby-carriage along the sidewalk. "Why, we've had a revolution, your Majesty -- as you ought to know very well," replied the man; "and since you went away the women have been running things to suit themselves. I'm glad you have decided to come back and restore order, for doing housework and minding the children is wearing out the strength of every man in the Emerald City." "Hm!" said the Scarecrow, thoughtfully. "If it is such hard work as you say, how did the women manage it so easily?" "I really do not know," replied the man, with a deep sigh. "Perhaps the women are made of cast-iron.""

Random Thoughts On Last Night's Episode

If you haven't seen last night's Lost, you may not want to read this post.

- Jin's awesome. I really liked the scene when Sawyer saw him and realized he wasn't dead. Good stuff.

- Smokey appears to be a very bad monster. He's tricksey, too.

- Brandi and I laughed hard when Jack's dad told Locke, "Since when has listening to Ben gotten you anywhere worth a darn?"

- Ben's an evil manipulator. His little "Oh-if-you-only-knew-how-much-I-helped-you-all" tirade in the van was annoying. Like Smokey, Ben's tricksey.

- Too bad C.S. Lewis had to die. :-(

- I think Faraday is an immortal. That explains how he was a scary man when Lewis was a wee lass.

- I still don't get why Jack and his gang need to go back to the island. I can understand Sun (I call her "Moon" now since she's gone to the dark side and packin' 9s and all) wanting to get back to see Jin, but that's it.

- Do any of y'all remember Faraday's mum from previous seasons? She's had a few scenes throughout the years. :-)

- For all of Locke's flaws, you've got to admit he's got guts. Either that or he's crazy.

Are you on the "Ben is evil" team yet?

Jack (and co.) "need" to go back to the island to rescue those they left behind. Or are you saying they should just leave 'em and forget about it?

2. Bird - 02/12/2009 7:54 am CST

Brooooooo,

Check the Thinklings archives, broooo. I've always believed Ben is evil. I think Bill and Blo have always been the ones who are soft on evil Ben.

About them going back, I smell ya'. ;-)

We still don't know everything about Benry. What's ironic is that Ben (in present day) is doing the exact same thing that Jack's dad instructed Locke to do in the well. So somehow, Ben (who isn't worth listening to) is doing what is supposed to be done . . .

No commentary about the temple? We always knew that the smoke monster was part of the island's "security system", but we didn't know what, exactly, it was securing - right? No one's ever mentioned a temple before. It appears if we have a little bit of ancient Egyptian technology at work, here. Do the 4-toed statues correlate?

As far as Faraday being immortal, he's either that or he got caught during a time jump, found a young CS Lewis and told her to stay away - I wonder how much longer until we see that scene. It doesn't look as if there's too much more time jumping to be had what with Bentham getting ready to reset the underground wheel. The question is, I guess, if an immortal Faraday warned a young CS Lewis, that would not only make Faraday immortal, but able to see into the future. A time-jumping Faraday still seems to make more sense to me.

I don't think the "need" for the group to go back to the island has been established yet. Locke is supposed to go get them and talk to them, I guess. It's possible that even Locke doesn't know why they NEED to come back, he just knows that they do. We might not know until end of this or beginning of next season.

I thought the Eloise reveal was a little melodramatic - did anyone really not know who she was after last week? What WAS interesting was Benry's reaction when Desmond mentioned that she is Faraday's mother - it's possible that Ben's been playing with the opposite team, here. I think Faraday is closely related to Widmore and Ben knew this - but didn't know that Eloise was Faraday's mom until Desmond piped up. That makes team Ben and team Chuck partners for now- something Ben won't be happy to put up with much longer. I suspect Ben might try and kill her.

Good point! I didn't think of that.

5. Jared - 02/12/2009 10:18 am CST

Yikes! Sorry, Bird. I didn't look at who posted this, but just assumed Bill did, as he's our usual Lost wrapper-upper.

He's super soft on Ben's evilness. In fact, Bill's pretty soft on evil in general, being all pro-torture in 24 and everything. Really, Bill is just flat-out evil.

6. Quaid - 02/12/2009 10:21 am CST

Ben is Evil
Bill is Evil

Ben is Bill.

7. Andrew - 02/12/2009 10:51 am CST

Ben is Evil

... but he's so cool.

8. Evan - 02/12/2009 11:13 am CST

I think both Ben and Charles Widmore will turn out to be playing a master game of chess for control of the island. The Losties and nearly all the other characters are merely pawns in the game, with both Ben and Widmore arranging and sometimes even sacrificing certain 'pawns' when needed to gain an advantage. But both Ben & Widmore will honestly believe they are on the side of the angels, since they believe the other person to be the real evil to be defeated.

And we as an audience will be left debating who was worse.

9. Brian - 02/12/2009 12:39 pm CST

Smokey appears to be a very bad monster. He's tricksey, too.

And he can cut/rip(?) people's arms out of their sockets. Good skill set for a monster, I'd say. Didn't Vincent find an arm in an earlier season?

I wonder if we'll find out what exactly Smokey did to Rousseau's crew. At least we know that Danielle wasn't lying to Sayid when she told them they all got "sick".

Does anyone else not trust Christian "I can hold this lantern but not help you up" Shepherd? I'm not convinced he's a mouthpiece for Jacob or that he really wants to help Locke.

And let me get this straight.... Ben is in cohoots with Eloise who is Daniel's mom. But Widmore - Ben's enemy - was funding Daniel's research. Just wondering who's keeping the secrets from whom in this scenario.

Who says the lantern was real? :)

11. Jared - 02/12/2009 2:28 pm CST

Yeah, I assumed he was like a ghost or something, so he wasn't exactly refusing to help Locke so much as that he wasn't able to physically. Could be wrong, though.

Just when you think you're on your way to figuring stuff out, it gets wackier and wackier. I love this show.

13. Brandon Milan - 02/12/2009 5:18 pm CST

i didn't read the post, because I haven't watched last night's episode yet... but I just thought that I would point out that as of February 1, 2009, I had not seen a single episode of Lost. On February 2, 2009, my wife and I decided to rent Season 1.

After a week of forsaking many responsibilities, the only episode I have left to watch is last night's episode.

14. Jared - 02/12/2009 5:41 pm CST

Welcome to the cult, Brandon. :-)

15. Bird - 02/12/2009 7:06 pm CST

Brandon,

You're officially a brother now. All we need to do now is get Mr. Ekko to baptize you.

16. Bill - 02/12/2009 8:25 pm CST

Ok, I wasn't able to watch it last night, and finally watched it just now. So I can join the party.

A few random thoughts about your random thoughts, and the rest of this thread, even Jared's whacked ramblings.

"You're officially a brother now. All we need to do now is get Mr. Ekko to baptize you."

Funniest line I've read in a long while! Diet coke through the nose funny.

Faraday is a time jumper, not immortal. First, he has a mom, and his mom was that chick from the fifties, so I'm pretty sure he hasn't been around that long, and plus what Jared said.

"Jack (and co.) "need" to go back to the island to rescue those they left behind."

In what way? Jack blustering in all drunk and in a frenzy to "fix problems" hasn't gotten them very far yet and won't rescue anyone. The only person who gets anything done on that island is Ben.

I still don't see what them going back will do. It seems so contrived. I'd wager that John turning the wheel (getting it to quit skipping) might have done the trick just fine.

Seriously, what heroic deed will Jack do when he gets there? Yell at someone? Call a freighter full of Widmore paramilitaries with machine guns in to kill all the redshirts? Leave Jin on the boat to blow up and die? Lie? Get in league with evil Ben? Yank a chain and look intense? What will he do?

And he'll STILL be Ben's fawning lackey. If Ben is evil (I'm undecided and thought that part in the van when Ben screeched to a stop was awesome) then Jack is the monkeyboy of evil-man.

Seriously, that was delicious. Jack was all "I'm going to kill Ben", then Ben provided some verbal smackdown to stop that kind of talk. Awesome.

Ben's good! He's good!

Evan, #8 - most insightful comment I've read in a long time.

Also, the Smokey parts with Rousseau's crew were awesome. And Rousseau blowing her faux-husband away (so, were they possessed by Smokey or what?) was . . . wow. No wonder she turned out as she did. It's tough knowing what she's in for, giving birth to Alex and having her stolen away.

Oh yeah, Ben stole Alex. And allowed her to be shot by the crazy paramilitary guys Jack called in on the satellite phone.

Ben's evil.

(or IS he?)

I think that it is possible that Faraday is an immortal... in one of the season 4 episodes, it seemed like he and cs lewis were working on his memory... in other words, he had trouble remembering things...

if thats the case, he may not remember his past...

18. brandontmilan - 02/12/2009 9:38 pm CST

another thought that I had... that was not directly related to this post... i don't think Hurley is crazy... I don't think that all of those dead people he keeps seeing are figments of his imagination... i think they are either real or illusions caused by some outside force...

19. Jared - 02/12/2009 11:09 pm CST

Bill is the Rose/Barnard of The Thinklings. Just whining and bickering while the rest of us handle Lost bidness.

20. Bill - 02/13/2009 5:42 am CST

I'm the John Locke of the island. Maligned, persecuted, but, ultimately, right in every instance.

Either that or I'm the Hurley - the moral center that stands against Jack's lies.

Jared and Bird are both Kate.

21. brandontmilan - 02/13/2009 7:39 am CST

So you're saying that Jared and Bird are the love interest of almost everyone else on the island?

22. Bird - 02/13/2009 8:00 am CST

I'm Kate? Jared's Kate?

There's some Shackesque theology in there somewhere, but I can dig it!

Cool insight on the chess game... I've thought it was a game of sorts for a long time, but hadn't narrowed it down to chess.
Yes! The scene in the van where Ben became all good-seeming was welcome. He'd sort of been nothing for awhile. I love when he messes with our heads and we don't know if he's good or evil.
OK, the smoke, yes, is evil and very deceptive. It had to be the smoke beckoning everyone down in the hole and then possessed them to be murderous of poor, decent, (and pg. to boot!) Danielle. I wonder why it wanted to kill her. (And why has it not seemed to possess any of Jack and the gang, except possibly, Locke?) And remember the Mr. Ekko show where the smoke masqueraded as Yemi his priest brother? Yemi (aka: smoke) did tons of weird stuff that show, leading Eko around.
Now, remember when Ben, as a sort of last resort, opened that closet and the smoke came out and kicked butt on everyone? This means that Ben runs the smoke, so quite possibly Ben is evil.
Dang, just like with poor, doomed Shannon, CS Lewis really grew on me about 2 seconds before she died. I sure wish she'd gotten a flashback. Saw a cool insight online, that she, like Lucy of Narnia, had been to a land that others tried to convince her was her imagination. I like Faraday, but doesn't his acting style become slightly tedious? He always acts so strained and confused.
Where are Bernard and Rose? Bickering through time?

I agree. He always does that squinting thing. His lines are cool enough to offset it most of the time, for me, anyway. Besides, his acting style is not nearly as annoying as the actress who plays Juliet. Glare, cock your head, speak slow and monotone, then repeat.
