"As they passed the rows of houses they saw through the open doors that men were sweeping and dusting and washing dishes, while the women sat around in groups, gossiping and laughing. "What has happened?" the Scarecrow asked a sad-looking man with a bushy beard, who wore an apron and was wheeling a baby-carriage along the sidewalk. "Why, we've had a revolution, your Majesty -- as you ought to know very well," replied the man; "and since you went away the women have been running things to suit themselves. I'm glad you have decided to come back and restore order, for doing housework and minding the children is wearing out the strength of every man in the Emerald City." "Hm!" said the Scarecrow, thoughtfully. "If it is such hard work as you say, how did the women manage it so easily?" "I really do not know," replied the man, with a deep sigh. "Perhaps the women are made of cast-iron.""

Thoughts on 24's Finale

Spoilers exist in this post . . .

****************

Well, 24, my *other* show (Lost is - well was - my favorite show) ended tonight.

I only have a few thoughts.

1. Chloe rocks. A brave woman and a good friend. Plus, she's the best techno-geek on TV.

2. It was nice to see Jack do the right thing.

3. It was nice to see Taylor wise up and do the right thing as well. It was maddening, on the other hand, to see her continue to take advice from Logan up until the time she finally wised up.

4. Logan . . . despicable to the end. And a terrible shot to boot.

5. Pillar. Irritating, but he didn't deserve to be offed by his boss.

6. Jack bit off Pillar's ear. I'm still processing that.

10. Nothing stops Jack. Not being stabbed, twice. Not being shot (by the way, there's a common meme on TV these days: the "straight through" shot that is evidently very easy to recover from. I don't know - if I got shot I'd be a big baby, incapacitated for weeks). Being ambushed didn't stop him either, even though it stopped everyone else.

11. Jack has amazing "look directly into the heart of the drone" vision.

Cole is going to be significant in the upcoming movie. i wonder where it'll be set, Africa again?
Logan didn't die. interesting. i still think he'll be the black hat.
yeah, i couldn't believe that Jack kept going after 2 stabs and a gunshot. it actually looked like Chloe didn't get the shot off and my immediate thought was "did Jack just off himself?"
why would the Americans be after Jack after the story came out? i get why the Russians would want him but he was still following up the trail of terrorists and he didn't actually kill Americans to get this done, not even Piller.
the look into the drone was very cool to end it. very cool.
i don't know what to watch anymore with 24, LOST and Heroes down for the count.

Not being shot (by the way, there's a common meme on TV these days: the "straight through" shot that is evidently very easy to recover from. I don't know - if I got shot I'd be a big baby, incapacitated for weeks).

I've noticed it too on both Chuck and Grey's Anatomy.

BTW - I never watch Grey's (my wife does) but I watched that season finale with her - it was over-the-top for sure, but gets major points for edge-of-your-seat drama.

Back to 24. shallow, I think Jack has some 'splainin' to do for taking out a presidential motorcade - they'll come after him for that....and it won't be Taylor's administration going after him, it will likely be one less sympathetic. I read on another blog that the president could pardon Jack fully before resigning - that's a good point.

My favorite part of the episode was when Logan was explaining to Pillar that they HAVE TO kill Jack. "No matter how deep we bury him, he'll come back, he'll dig out no matter what, he'll rise from the ashes". I LOVE that!

And I'm with Bill - in the end, it was simply about the friendship (and refreshingly not a romantic one) between Chloe and Jack......I found it extremely touching. I hope that Chloe and Jack translate well to the big screen, because they're two of my top 10 characters ever on TV.

wouldn't doing the right thing be owning up to his "crimes?" he's skipping out!

and, sorry, but i thought the pinpoint drone stare was laughable. of course, i'm not a die hard 24 fan. just thought i'd jump in!

5. nhe - 05/25/2010 8:04 pm CDT

Stroke, he didn't commit any crimes, he killed people that needed killin'......simple as that.

Give me my cheesy drone stare - you can have your "sideways-universe-is-this-purgatory?-what-the-heck-is-going-on?-doesn't-matter-I'll-blindly-just-say-I-love-it!" final Lost episode.......and no, I'm not bitter that that thread only has 100 more comments than this one.

6. stroke - 05/25/2010 8:11 pm CDT

nhe,

if he didn't commit any crimes, why is he runnin'? i get what you're saying, just don't think we can label bauer as an innocent who finally did the right thing.

and i didn't blindly just say i loved the LOST finale, you OBVIOUSLY don't read my blog. (ha, total rib there. very few people read my blog.)

he SHOULD have said, "chloe, DON'T set up a perimeter. this is goodbye... don't fight it." and thrown his never-die cell phone aside as he walked off into the sunset.

nhe,

I like 24 as much as anyone (well, sort of) but Jack was completely out of hand this season. That torture scene was sickening and one of the worst things I've ever seen.

He wasn't trying to prevent an imminent attack. He wasn't trying to prevent anything, really. He was just out for revenge. Thank goodness Chloe pulled him back from the ledge.

8. nhe - 05/25/2010 9:39 pm CDT

I agree it was too much Bill..........I was just as disappointed as you were with that scene - whatever happened to inducing vomiting?......for overall entertainment value and payoff, I just think 24 is a better series than Lost.......I know I'm in the minority here.

Stroke.......he committed crimes, no question. I was just using a line from a Western (wish I could remember which one) for fun. I don't condone many of Jack's actions this season, I probably would find a way to defend him before this season. They had him cross the line this year.

Sorry I didn't know your feelings on Lost - I was just saying that more to the 105 gazillion Lost geeks here......I kid, though I do seriously not understand why people rave about something they can't figure out. I had the same problem with the Matrix trilogy.

I do seriously not understand why people rave about something they can't figure out.

what about God? ooooohhhh burn!

wilson, out!

10. nhe - 05/26/2010 7:39 am CDT

I knew someone would say that stroke! I knew it! I'm pretty sure I only rave about the things of God that I at least think I get.

Yay!! The 24 series finale thread comments reached double figures! That's all I could hope for.
